Percentage formulas and examples
Use this free percentage calculator for everyday maths: find a percent of a number, compare values, calculate a discount, or work out tips, tax, margin and markup. Choose a calculation above and enter two numbers for an instant result.
Percentage of a number
Multiply the number by the percentage, then divide by 100. For example, 20% of 250 = 250 × 20 ÷ 100 = 50.
Use percentage of a numberOne number as a percentage of another
Divide the part by the total and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 60 = 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%. The total cannot be zero.
Use one number as a percentage of anotherPercentage increase or decrease
Subtract the starting value from the new value, divide by the absolute starting value, and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase; from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease. A zero starting value is undefined.
Use percentage increase or decreaseAdd a percentage
Multiply the number by (1 + percentage ÷ 100). Adding 15% to 200 gives 230.
Use add a percentageSubtract a percentage
Multiply the number by (1 − percentage ÷ 100). Subtracting 15% from 200 gives 170.
Use subtract a percentageDiscount calculator
Find a sale price by multiplying the original price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A 25% discount on 120 saves 30 and leaves a final price of 90.
Use discount calculatorTip calculator
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100, then add the tip to the bill. A 15% tip on 450 is 67.50, making the total 517.50.
Use tip calculatorTax and VAT calculator
Enter a price before tax and your applicable tax or VAT rate. At a rate of 25%, 800 plus tax is 1,000, including 200 in tax. This calculator adds the rate you enter; it does not look up tax rates or remove included tax.
Use tax and vat calculatorProfit margin calculator
Divide profit (sale price minus cost) by the sale price and multiply by 100. A cost of 60 and sale price of 100 give a 40% margin. The sale price cannot be zero.
Use profit margin calculatorMarkup calculator
Divide profit (sale price minus cost) by cost and multiply by 100. A cost of 60 and sale price of 100 give approximately 66.67% markup. Cost cannot be zero.
Use markup calculatorPercentage difference calculator
For positive numbers, divide their absolute difference by their average and multiply by 100. For 80 and 100, the difference is approximately 22.22%. This calculator averages absolute values when inputs are negative and returns 0% when both are zero.
Use percentage difference calculatorFind the total from a percentage
Divide the part by (percentage ÷ 100). If 45 is 30% of a total, the total is 150. The percentage cannot be zero.
Use find the total from a percentageComparing values over time? Use percentage change. Comparing two values without a starting point? Use percentage difference. For selling prices, compare margin with markup.
Frequently asked questions
What does percent mean?
Percent means per hundred. For example, 20% is 20 out of 100, or 0.2 as a decimal.
How do percentage change and percentage difference differ?
Percentage change compares a new value with a starting value and describes an increase or decrease. Percentage difference compares two values without choosing a starting value, using their average magnitude as the denominator.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin measures profit as a percentage of the sale price. Markup measures profit as a percentage of cost. With a cost of 60 and a sale price of 100, margin is 40% and markup is about 66.67%.
Can I enter decimals and negative numbers?
Yes. Use a comma or a dot for decimals. Results display up to six decimal places. Negative values are accepted; percentage change uses the absolute starting value, and percentage difference uses the average of absolute values.
Are my calculations saved?
No. Calculations run on your device, and the calculator does not save the numbers you enter.
